About The Integrated Anesthesia Associates Hartford CRNA Program

The NAPH (Nurse Anesthesia Program of Hartford) will take 3 years (36 months) to complete. It is a full time program that enables critical care nurses to transition to being Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists or CRNAs. IAA or Integrated Anesthesia Associates is a conducting organization that has an academic affiliation with the Central Connecticut State University where they provide clinical facilities and grant the DNAP (Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice) degree. 

The application deadline for the CRNA program is September 1st of every year. Successful applicants are notified by November so that classes can start in May. 

Each class will have approximately 10 to 20 students and the program is front loaded where you’ll start with didactic foundational sciences courses that will need to be done at the university in the first year. Once you’ve successfully completed this first year, then you’ll move onto a  2-year clinical phase which will be done at the following locations:

  • Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
  • Midstate Medical Center
  • Hospital of Central Connecticut
  • Hartford Hospital
  • Connecticut Children’s Medical Center Surgery Center, 
  • St. Vincent’s Medical Center

This school has a 100% employment rate (2022 and 2023). The NCE First time exam pass rate was 90% in 2022 and 100% in 2023. The attrition rate for the class of 2024 is 10%.

Ranking & Accreditation

This program is fully accredited by the COA. It was reviewed in October, 2018 and was granted a 10 year accreditation which will be up for review again in 2028. Additionally, this program is also accredited by the NECHE – New England Commission on Higher Education which was also known as NEASC – New England Association Schools and Colleges.

What Sets The IAA Nurse Anesthesia Program of Hartford Apart?

  1. One thing that sets this school apart is that by the end of the program, you’ll have handled approximately 800 cases and 3,000 clinical hours. 
  2. There are many clinical conferences and meetings that you can attend on weekends/Saturdays.

NAPH CRNA Admission Requirements

Early decision applicants will need to meet the typical requirements in addition to being a resident of Connecticut as well as have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or more. Typical applicants will need to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 or more. 

To qualify for an interview, the applicant must meet the following requirements by the application deadline:

Firstly, you will need to have an unencumbered licence as a professional nurse in at least one of the 50 states. You should also be able to get a Connecticut nursing licence if you currently don’t have one. Additionally, you will need to have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing or Baccalaureate Degree in a science that is approved by the Admission committee. 

There are prerequisite courses where you should have at least a B grade such as pharmacology, statistics and 2 semesters of chemistry. Note that one of the semesters should be biochemistry or organic chemistry and the next semester should be general chemistry or inorganic chemistry. Other additional courses include physiology and human anatomy (2 semesters). Do note that these need to be completed within 8 years of your application. 

Next, you will also need to submit 3 professional references: a peer, your ICU nurse educator and your current ICU supervisor. 

You’ll also have to submit a personal essay or statement which details your reasons for wanting to become a CRNA, professional goals etc. This statement needs to be 300 words or less. 

There is also an application fee of $150 that will need to be paid by check to the IAA. 

Critical Care Experience

You will need to have a minimum of 18 months of experience working in critical care before you can be admitted into the IAA’s Nurse Anesthesia Program. Do note that this time frame excludes your orientation period into the program. 

The preferred areas of critical care experience are as follows:

  1. Neurosurgical/Neuro 
  2. Medical ICU
  3. Cardiothoracic ICU
  4. Pediatric ICU
  5. Trauma ICU
  6. Surgical/Trauma ICU

Non-acceptable forms of critical care experience are:

  1. PACU
  2. Emergency Department
  3. NICU

Required Certifications

You will need the following certifications:

  1. BLS
  2. ACLS
  3. CCRN
  4. PALS

All About The Interview

Information about the interviews are a bit scarce, but according to past interviewees, they experienced a mix of personal and clinical questions. The interviewers themselves were very friendly and approachable which made the experience significantly less stressful.
